Weeds are the never-ending battle of any gardener. By this time of year, maybe you've given up or at least want to give up that battle against the weeds. But don't give up yet. In this class, we will cover our favorite ways to effectively and efficiently fight weeds. We will cover our favorite techniques of garden and soil management to reduce weeds, and favorite techniques and tools for weeding to make the task fast, painless, and reduce weeds next year.

With the growing season coming to an end, many plants grown outside can be continued in your home: herbs and spices, tomatoes and peppers, and citrus. Many factors influence the ability to grow inside, like space, resources, and patience. In this virtual class, we cover the basics of transitioning your summer and fall crops indoors. Discussed topics include the best edible indoor plants, transitioning to indoor containers, soil, lighting, watering, fertilizing, and propagation. Learn how to bring agriculture inside!

Food All Winter: Harvesting & Storing Fall Crops

In this hands-on class, we will harvest and prepare for storage some of the great crops that you can eat long into winter if done properly. We will harvest taro, sweet potatoes, storage tomatoes, Jerusalem artichokes, and water chestnuts. Then we will go over the proper way to cure those that need it and the best way to store each one for medium to long-term storage. So if you've ever been interested in growing some of these plants so you can eat from the garden all winter long, or have questions about how to grow them, harvest them, or store them, this is your chance to try it yourself and find out.
Time: 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. (Please note the earlier than normal start time!)

Join us for a hands-on workshop to consider the power of wonder, imagination, exploration, and play in your garden space. Whether you tend a home, school, or community garden, this class will help you build a safe and inviting space for children. Explore examples of whimsical hardscape and sensory engagement in youth-friendly gardens, and sketch your own garden design. Experience garden-based activities that spark curiosity and participation, build an inclusive learning community, inspire adventurous eaters, and foster environmental stewardship. This workshop is open to any and all educators, caregivers, and community members interested in gardening with children!

A Midsummer Night's Drink: A Garden Party for School & Youth Gardeners

Because of extreme heat, this garden party has been rescheduled for August 28th! Our Summer School Gardeners Meet-Up, A Midsummer Night's Drink, will be a garden party celebration to thank all of the garden leaders, educators, and adults who support youth gardening in the region. We hope to use this time to collect feedback from attendees to help guide our school and youth garden programs going forward. Dress for a casual evening in the garden with cocktails, mocktails, appetizers, garden games, and garden giveaways. You are welcome to bring your own potluck item if you wish. This is a free event open to anyone who gardens with youth, but you must RSVP.

Our Fall Seedling Sale will have variety trial winners and old favorites! Fall seedlings are sold as 4-packs for $3.50 each. A planting guide for all of the plants being sold will be available for you to take home. We will also have seed packets, including cover crops, and Seed St. Louis Gettin' Dirty t-shirts.

Whether using the garden as a living laboratory, an outdoor workshop, or a place to study food systems and nutrition, the garden is the ultimate teaching tool to facilitate hands-on, integrated learning! This class will model how you can effortlessly integrate the garden into your curriculum, no matter the subject. Attendees will leave with ideas for connecting the curriculum to the garden. In addition, a variety of outdoor classroom management tips and tricks will be shared so that you can bring your students outside with confidence.

Saving your own seeds is a great way to save money, preserve genetic diversity, adapt a crop to your local environment, and even develop your own varieties. Dean Gunderson, Chief Programs Officer here at Seed St. Louis, will cover the easiest crops to save seeds, the basics of saving seeds, and the basics of selecting your own varieties. Registration required. A recording of this virtual program will be posted to St. Louis County Library YouTube channel within three business days. Are you interested in learning how to build a raised bed for your garden, but don’t know where to start? Join us for a hands-on workshop where you will learn all the basics you need to know to build your own raised garden bed! Our staff will help guide you through the step-by-step process of constructing a functional raised bed. There are two ways you can participate in this class.
1. You can attend for free and leave with the knowledge and confidence to build your own raised bed at home.
2. You can pay for materials and leave with a 4’x4’ ($45) or 4’x8’ ($60) raised garden bed that you install in your yard. All tools and materials will be provided during the class. No prior experience is needed! We hope to see you there!
If you build a bed to take home, you will need to be able to transport it, as there are no delivery options. As this is a workshop, make sure to dress for the weather and in things you are comfortable getting dirty.
This class will be located outside behind the Seed St. Louis Carriage House at 3815 Bell Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63108. There is free street parking all along Bell Avenue.
